Department Lead Selection & Guidelines : 5:10:00:01

Responsible Executive: Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

I. PURPOSE

This policy details the guidelines and processes of selection of a Department Lead within an academic department at Motlow State Community College (Motlow State).  The policy outlines the responsibility of communicating vacancies, application process for interested applicants, and compensation for successful candidates for Department Lead positions.

II. BACKGROUND

Department Leads are selected for a term of two (2) years by the Academic Deans responsible for the department, with input from departmental faculty after careful review of their academic and leadership abilities both in and out of the classroom.  Department Leads may have successive terms.  Department Leads have the responsibility for reviewing the programs of study, curricular changes, substitutions and waivers, and advising the Deans of departmental matters.

III. SELECTION

  1. When a department lead position is vacated, the Academic Dean will send an email announcement to the full-time faculty in the department asking for resumes from interested candidates.
  2. Interest discussions will be scheduled with departmental candidates.
  3. The Academic Dean will make the final decision with input from the departmental faculty.

IV. COMPENSATION

  1. To attract and retain the best possible faculty to this position, Motlow State provides the following options:
    1. Department Leads have a choice of two (2) courses per semester release time or a premium stipend.
    2. Premium stipends are paid at the rate of $700 per semester credit hour.  This would total $4,200 per semester or $8,400 per academic year.
    3. Additionally, Motlow State will pay a $1,000 per month stipend for June and July to department leads for essential work such as (but not limited to) credentialing, textbook management, and fall semester adjunct preparation.  Summer pay is capped at 25% per Tennessee Board of Regents Policy 5.02.04.10.

NOTE: Terms are retroactive for leads currently in the position upon the revision date of the policy.
